Product Description

Shurtape P-672 Professional-Grade Gaffers Tape, now called P-672 Premium Grade, Light Duty Gaffer's Tape by Shurtape, is a matte-finish coated cloth tape for jobs that call for a strong, abrasion-resistant cloth tape. It has high tensile strength, tears by hand in both the machine and cross directions and meets CID A-A-1586A and MIL-STD-2041.

Shurtape recommends P-672 for sealing containers, temporary protection from welding spatter, general holding and bundling and temporary repairs. Stage and video production crews use it for taping cables and grip work and describe it as thick, stiff and sticky with a high thread count, tearing cleanly and removing without residue. Compared with Shurtape P-665, P-672 is a little shinier, stiffer and thicker, while P-665 is more conformable. Because of its strong adhesion, test first on lacquered or waxed floors and wood, where it can lift the finish. Originally made by Permacel, P-672 is one of the best-selling gaffers tapes at FindTape.

QUESTION: I am looking for a tape to repair a 1" thick leather portfolio binder where the front cover has broken off from the spine.
ANSWER: Yes, Shurtape P-672 will work for reattaching the front cover to the spine of your binder. It is a vinyl-coated cloth tape and Shurtape lists bookbinding and repairing among its applications. Its 58 lbs per inch tensile strength is far more than a binder hinge will ever see, so the backing itself will not tear. One thing worth knowing: on a hinge repair, the tape rarely breaks. What determines how long the repair lasts is how well the adhesive holds to the leather and how well the tape flexes each time the cover opens and closes. P-672 is the thickest and stiffest of our gaffers tapes at 14 mils. If you prefer something that folds more easily at the joint, Pro Tapes Pro-Gaff or Shurtape P-665 are slightly more conformable cloth tapes that come in a wider range of colors.

Great tape!
Shurtape P-672 Professional Grade Gaffers Tape
I use this tape for video production and stage production work. Ie, taping cables down, grip work, etc. First impresions was that the tape is very well made, high thread count, thick, stiff, and sticky. What i liked is that the batch i got tears perfectly strait at 90 degrees unlike other tapes brands that sometimes have batches that tear on odd angles. As expected it left no residue on surfaces, but compared to other tapes I regularly use (ProGaff, Entertainment Industry Tape) this tape has a higher adhesion that did cause damage to some more delicate surfaces when removed. It seemed to pull up laquer/wax coating on flooring and wood surfaces. I mainly blame it on the poorly maintained floor laquer/surface, not the tape but as always, use caution when using on questionalble/delicate surfaces such as stained/sealed wood, painted surfaces, etc. Even with the high adhesion, undwinding the tape off the roll was easy, smooth, and consistent and is easy to tear. It's fairly noisy when unwinding which makes it hard to use covertly during a performance for example. Overall this tape is a joy to use, performs excellent and is the best I've used so far. It might actually be too much for some people's needs but you won't regret using it. I got a case of red 2 inch x 50 yard tape and I am very glad i did.

Shinier and thicker than 665
Shurtape P-672 Professional Grade Gaffers Tape
672 is a little shinier, stiffer, and thicker than 665. For me, I can't see that it's a significant improvement over 665, which is more conformable and sticks just fine. Some might see the shine as a problem.
Made in the USA
hot melt rubber (synthetic)
Offers the widest range of application flexibility available. Exhibits excellent processing performance whether manually or automatically applied. Has superior tensile strength, adhesion properties and holding force which ensures consistent, reliable seals. Hot melt adhesive will bond faster to a surface which is referred to as quick-grab or quick-stick. It typically has higher tack (will feel stickier to the touch), but is also softer. It has lower heat resistance, shear resistance, and sometimes UV resistance than an acrylic adhesive. NOTE: it is called hot melt because the adhesive is applied hot by the manufacturer and then hardens as it cools (you do not need to apply heat to the tape yourself).
natural rubber
Properties are similar to that of hot melt rubber, but natural rubber often holds where other adhesives won't (recycled fibers, dust, cold, heat and heavy loads). It provides good overall adhesion and moisture resistance.
acrylic
Offer excellent performance, especially for applications in temperatures less than 40°F and greater then 120°F. It provides excellent clarity, has high shear strength, is usually more permanent/durable even when exposed to moisture, and it ages well over extended periods in fluorescent and sunlight. Since it remains clear for the life of the application and does not yellow over time it is ideal for applications such as sealing white cartons. While it has good initial adhesion it does take 24-48 hours to cure and to achieve its maximum bond strength (has gradual adhesion buildup). Another difference between hot melt rubber and acrylic adhesive is if you fold tape over making the two adhesive sides touch the acrylic adhesive will remain attached to the carrier (e.g. paper, film) while a hot melt adhesive will stick to itself and pull off of the carrier. It is the best choice for clarity, UV resistance and aging characteristics.
silicone
Is great for extreme temperature applications since silicone adhesive can work in continuous operating temperatures from -100°F to 500°F. They also exhibit good chemical resistance, retain electrical properties, and remove cleanly with little or no residue.
zinc oxide
Zinc oxide based adhesive formula is a skin-friendly adhesive which is commonly used on sports medicine tapes.
Thickness, AKA caliper or gauge, refers to the distance from one surface of a tape backing, or adhesive, to the other.
1 mil = 1/1000 of an inch
Examples: 1/16 inch = 62.5 mils; 1/32 inch = 31.25 mils
The cut level indicates how many grams of cutting load a glove can withstand from a sharp blade before being penetrated.
Lower gauge gloves are heavier - have thicker construction, fewer stiches knitted per inch and offer less dexterity.
Higher gauge gloves are lighter - have thinner/finer construction, more stitches knitted per inch and offer more dexterity.
Gloves offered typically runs from 7 to 18 (12 and 13 are in the middle of the scale).
