Product Description
Pro-Trace HDD-CCS PE45 is a 12 AWG extra high strength copper clad steel (EHS-CCS) tracer wire made for horizontal directional drilling (HDD), directional boring and pipe bursting. The solid, hard-drawn conductor bonds a uniform, continuous copper cladding to an AISI 1055 high carbon steel core, so the two metals act as one conductor. It traces with the same signal as solid copper while carrying a 1,330 lb break load, almost 700% the break load of copper.
That strength is the point of this wire. In a bore, the tracer wire is pulled back through the hole with the product pipe, and a wire that snaps during pullback leaves a line that cannot be located. The HDD-CCS break load allows one wire to be installed in critical bores, which saves material and the cost of a re-bore. It also costs less than copper wire and has steadier pricing.
Insulation and Burial Rating
The conductor is jacketed in 45 mil high-density, high molecular weight polyethylene (HDHMWPE) extruded per ASTM D1248 and rated 600V for direct burial. The jacket resists abrasion, crushing, impact, moisture, oil, acids and chemicals, keeps 90% of its tensile strength after 48 hours at 100°C, and has a brittleness temperature of -76°C (-105°F) per ASTM D746.
HDD-CCS or HS-CCS?
Both Pro-Trace wires trace with the same signal as copper. The difference is the conductor. HDD-CCS is hard-drawn extra high strength steel with a 1,330 lb break load; it is stiffer and holds its shape, which is what a bore pullback or pipe burst needs. Pro-Trace HS-CCS PE45 uses an annealed high strength conductor with about a third of that break load and the flexibility and feel of copper, for open-trench, open-cut and plow-in work. If your project specification names HDD-CCS, choose this wire. For standard 30V open-cut runs, see Pro-Trace HS-CCS PE30.
Uses & Applications
- Horizontal directional drilling and directional boring
- Pipe bursting and long or difficult bore shots
- Locating non-metallic water, sewer, gas, telecom and electric lines
- Utility conduit systems and construction sites
Color Coding
Jacket colors follow the APWA Uniform Color Code, so the wire identifies the utility it traces. Match the jacket color to the utility being installed.
Tips
- HDD-CCS works with the tracer wire connectors you already use.
- Secure the wire to the pulling head or reamer so it travels back with the pipe during pullback.
- Do not substitute building wire such as THHN for tracer wire. Its thin jacket is not made for direct burial or pullback.
- Writing a spec? Pro-Line's sample specification calls for a 12 AWG solid, hard-drawn, 21% IACS copper clad steel conductor with an AISI 1055 core and 1,330 lb minimum break load, in a 45 mil HDPE jacket rated for direct burial at 600 volts.
